Helping Your Pet Move Without Pain

When your dog or cat is limping, favoring a leg, or struggling to get up, it affects their quality of life and yours. Robertsdale Animal Clinic offers orthopedic care focused on one goal: getting your pet back to moving comfortably, whether that means a slow walk around the yard or an all-out sprint at the dog park.

Our team is experienced in diagnosing and treating disorders of the musculoskeletal system, including bones, joints, ligaments, and tendons. We use the least invasive approach appropriate for your pet’s condition and work with you to understand the options before any procedure begins.

Signs Your Pet May Need Orthopedic Care

Orthopedic problems are not always obvious. Watch for these signs and call us if you notice any:

  • Limping or favoring one leg, especially after rest
  • Difficulty standing up, lying down, or climbing stairs
  • Swelling around a joint
  • Reluctance to run, jump, or play
  • Audible popping or grinding from a joint
  • Muscle loss in one limb compared to the other

Early evaluation almost always leads to better outcomes. If something looks off, don’t wait.

Orthopedic Procedures We Offer

TPLO: Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy

One of the most common orthopedic surgeries in dogs, TPLO addresses cruciate ligament disease, the canine equivalent of an ACL tear. It’s considered the gold standard for medium and large breed dogs and offers excellent long-term results.

Tight Rope Procedure

An alternative surgical approach for cruciate ligament disease, the Tight Rope technique uses a strong synthetic fiber to stabilize the knee. It is a good option for smaller dogs and active patients.

Medial Patellar Luxation

This condition occurs when the kneecap slips out of its normal position, causing pain and an abnormal gait. It is especially common in small breed dogs and is corrected surgically with high success rates.

Femoral Head Ostectomy (FHO)

FHO is a procedure that removes the head of the femur to eliminate painful bone-on-bone contact in the hip joint. It is often recommended for dogs and cats with severe hip dysplasia or femoral fractures when joint replacement is not an option.

Tendon and Ligament Injuries

Soft tissue injuries can be just as debilitating as bone fractures. We treat tears and ruptures of tendons and ligaments with surgical repair techniques tailored to the location and severity of the injury.

Fracture Fixation

We repair broken bones using a range of stabilization methods including bone plates, external fixators, and pins, depending on the fracture type, location, and your pet’s size and age.

What to Expect

Before any orthopedic procedure, we perform a thorough physical exam and use our digital radiography to get a clear picture of the affected area. We will walk you through the diagnosis, the recommended procedure, and what recovery looks like. Post-operative care and follow-up are part of the process, not an afterthought.
